Music Monday: The Native American Edition

On this Columbus Day, I would like to honor those who got the short end of the whole colonization deal; and one particular gal who has put many things in perspective for me: Pocahontas.

I absolutely loved this movie when it first came out. First of all, I was thrilled that Disney had finally released a movie about a brown girl and second, I loved the message behind the movie (make friends with animals, respect and take care of the earth, interracial dating is totes the new frontier, etc.) even if it is historically embellished.

“Just Around the River Bend” is a beautiful song that most of us can relate to at some point in our lives. We have all been at those points in our life where we are standing at the edge of the riverbed and need to choose a course.

Sometimes, we have to ask ourselves if we would prefer the uncertain, more difficult, yet more adventurous path or should we marry Kokoum and live a predictable, safe yet boring life?

I have referenced this song and the above image probably one too many times, as an adult, when I needed to make an important decision about my career, relationship or living arrangement. I find myself relating to Pocahontas’ need for “something else,” her search for a new adventure and her shunning of the conventional.

Maybe this week, if you are faced with one of those important decisions, you can ask yourself What Would Pocahontas Do? That question has helped me through more life dilemmas than I care to admit!

Happy Monday to all my copper and pale-skinned sisters!

In Love & Sisterhood,
